A Tool for Bone Fractures

Through constant or sudden pressure applied upon bones, a fracture or break in a bone is likely to occur. When a bone breaks into three or more pieces, it is called a Trauma Fracture. In the case of Trauma Fracture, the entire bone becomes very unstable and it becomes very likely that these fragments of bone can push themselves apart. In this case the only way to fix the bone is through surgery. During the surgery the broke elements of the bones are held in place with steel or titanium, allowing the bone to heal back together. These two materials are used because they are extremely stable and bind the bone back together while limiting the potential of breaking, allowing the bone to heal undisturbed. However, wherever the steel or titanium is connected to the bone, in order to hold the bone in place, new bone material is unable to grow, creating a potential weak or vulnerable spot on the bone.

By replacing the steel or titanium with a biological material, that can be formed and hardened in place, it is possible to create a scaffolding system or “Protective Structure for Trauma Fractures” that would allow the bone to re-heal, without the use of a foreign material in the body, such as a metal. This “Protective Structure for Trauma Fractures” would become a material for surgeons to use during an operation.

The surgeon could apply this “Protective Structure” to the affected areas of the bone allowing the bone to heal without use of mechanical devices and avoid future operations to extract the metal out of the body and away from the bone. Thus, also limiting the potential of weak or vulnerable spots on the bones, that are created through the use of healing via steel or titanium elements to hold the bone in place, helping to a create a stronger, healthier re-healed bone.
